Hiker Missing In Hawaii For Over Two Weeks Found Alive

A 35-year-old hiker who went missing over two weeks ago was found alive in the Makawao Forest Reserve in Maui, Hawaii. Amanda Eller was reported missing on May 9 when she failed to return from a hike in the 2,093-acre reserve. Authorities found her car, along with her wallet and cell phone not far from the entrance to the sanctuary and over 60 people began to search the area.

Officials got a break when Eller was spotted in a deep ravine between two waterfalls.

"We all look to our right ... and out of the woodwork, man, you see Amanda Eller, my friend, coming out, waving her hands," rescuer Javier Cantellops said. "It was unbelievable, dude. And we all, of course, lose it."

They dispatched a helicopter and airlifted Eller to safety. Her mother told KHON that she suffered a broken leg and was taken to the hospital for treatment. She was about 20 pounds underweight and had survived by eating berries and drinking fresh water.

Eller wanted to leave the hospital the same day, but her parents told her to relax and let the staff take care of her.

"There was even discussion of her going home this evening believe it or not," Eller's mother said. "But we--her dad said no. Just for the night, let her stay here and let them take care of you a little bit."
